TREATMENTS
ALP Paediatric Physiotherapy provides an incredibly comprehensive and structured approach to supporting children with paediatric neurological and orthopaedic conditions.

Paediatric physiotherapy is crucial in helping children achieve their developmental milestones, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life.

ALP

“Our work is driven by a passion for supporting families and helping children to reach their full potential through early intervention and ongoing therapy.”

Here is a breakdown of how each aspect of your treatment program may benefit your child:

Stretching

Purpose: Stretching helps improve flexibility and reduce muscle tightness, which can often be an issue for children with neurological conditions. It can help prevent contractures (permanent shortening of muscles or tendons), relieve pain, and support better posture.

Benefit: Promotes better joint range of motion and comfort, allowing for improved movement.

Strengthening

Purpose: Strengthening exercises target specific muscle groups to improve overall muscle tone, endurance, and stability.

Benefit: Strengthening weak muscles helps improve the child’s ability to perform everyday activities, like standing, walking, or sitting. It also supports overall physical function and reduces the risk of falls or injury.

Re-educating Normal Movement Patterns

Purpose: Children with neurological conditions may have abnormal movement patterns due to neurological damage or developmental delay. Physiotherapists work on re-training the brain and muscles to use more functional, typical movement patterns.

Benefit: This can enhance the child’s ability to perform tasks more efficiently and with less effort. It may also reduce compensatory movements that could lead to other issues down the line.

Balance Training

Purpose: Balance training helps improve coordination and stability. This is especially important for children who may have difficulty with proprioception (sense of where their body is in space).

Benefit: Improved balance can reduce the risk of falls, improve gait and posture, and support activities like standing, walking, or climbing stairs.

Improving Standing and Quality of Walking

Purpose: Many neurological conditions impact the ability to stand or walk normally. Targeted physiotherapy can help children develop better posture, alignment, and muscle activation for standing and walking.

Benefit: This can lead to improved independence and mobility, which significantly impacts the child’s daily life, increasing opportunities for social interaction and engagement.

Advice and Support for Parents and/or Teachers

Purpose: Parents and teachers play a central role in a child’s development and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists can provide guidance on how to support the child’s therapy outside of sessions.

Benefit: Offering strategies for daily activities, posture, and movement at home or in school ensures the child is getting continuous support and is working towards their goals in various environments.

Milestone Development

Purpose: A focus on developmental milestones helps ensure that children are progressing appropriately for their age and abilities.

Benefit: Identifying developmental delays early on allows for targeted interventions to help the child reach milestones in areas like mobility, coordination, and daily activities.

Fine and Gross Motor Skills

Purpose: Physiotherapists address both fine motor skills (e.g., hand-eye coordination, gripping) and gross motor skills (e.g., walking, running, jumping).

Benefit: Improving these skills promotes the child’s independence in everyday tasks like dressing, feeding, and playing. Fine motor work also supports school-related activities like writing or using tools.

By targeting these specific areas, your physiotherapy program can significantly improve the child's physical abilities, helping them achieve greater independence and an overall better quality of life. The structured approach also ensures that interventions are tailored to the child's individual needs, maximizing their potential.

Frequency of therapy sessions is based upon the individual's needs. These may be weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or termly.
