Advanced Spasticity Management

Botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) injections are a widely used, effective treatment for managing spasticity in specific muscle groups. The injections work by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals muscles to contract, which in turn helps to reduce muscle stiffness and spasticity. Here is an overview of how botulinum toxin injections are used and managed for spasticity.

Botulinum toxin injections can significantly improve spasticity-related symptoms and enhance quality of life when incorporated into a comprehensive management plan that includes physiotherapy, lifestyle adaptations, and regular assessments by a specialist physiotherapist.

Expert spasticity management significantly helps to relieve muscle stiffness and allow improvements in functional movements to emerge. Poor spasticity management often results in pain, muscle tightness and stiffness, leading to muscle contracture, deformity, and loss of function.

Spasticity management requires a comprehensive and holistic treatment approach to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes.

At ALP Paediatric Physiotherapy we ensure that patients who require spasticity management have an agreed treatment approach, including physiotherapy exercises, stretches, and advised orthotic management, to ensure they reach their full potential.
